Which drone operations are permitted in Switzerland without a permit?
In the “open category”: Flights under 120 m, with direct line of sight (VLOS), drones up to 25 kg and without overflight of crowds do not require a permit.
When do I need a permit for my drone?
As soon as you fly outside the "open category," for example, BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) or over crowds, these operations fall into the "special category" and require approval from the FOCA.
What is the difference between STS, PDRA and SORA?
- STS: Standardized operations with fixed rules.
- PDRA: Predefined risk scenarios with clear specifications.
- SORA: Individual risk analysis for complex missions.
How long does it take to receive approval?
We prepare your application in a few days (STS) to a few weeks (SORA). Depending on the type of permit, processing by the FOCA can take between one and six months.
What documents do I need for a permit application?
Usually an operating manual, a risk analysis and information about the drone, pilot and area of operation.
Who issues the permits – EASA, FOCA or cantons?
The FOCA (Federal Office of Civil Aviation) is the responsible authority.

Yes, but in many urban areas there are restrictions or a special permit is required.
Do I need a new permit for each deployment?

Only with special permission and additional safety requirements.
